A company with a long tradition
Dr. Niedermaier Pharma GmbH, based in Hohenbrunn near Munich, has been an independent German family-owned company since 1939, with a long-standing tradition and extensive expertise in botanical science, fermentation and enzyme research.

How everything began
At a time marked by unrest and uncertainty, the visionary pharmacist and food chemist Dr. Hans Niedermaier (1913–2003) took the courageous step of founding his own company. Guided by his vision of “Health in a Natural Way” and his philosophy of “Healing through Self-Healing,” he turned his convictions into reality. In 1939, Dr. Niedermaier Pharma GmbH was founded as a pharmaceutical company in Hohenbrunn near Munich.
Through his research into naturopathy, Dr. Hans Niedermaier gained extensive knowledge of the fascinating effects of enzymes. These fundamental findings provided valuable insights into the functionality of the body’s own enzymes. Building on this knowledge, he developed a new manufacturing technology: cascade fermentation. This innovative and patented process is regarded as the “gold standard of fermentation.”
Achieving the big breakthrough with passion and a vision
The family-owned company was taken over and further developed in 2001 by the founder’s daughter, pharmacist Dr. rer. nat. Cordula Niedermaier-May.
After completing her pharmacy studies, Cordula Niedermaier-May became self-employed and successfully opened her own pharmacy. But then came a turning point. In 2000, the family dog became seriously ill as a result of pesticide poisoning and recovered after being given a fermented essence. This profound experience prompted Cordula Niedermaier-May to sell her pharmacy and ultimately take over the struggling family business and her father’s research.
Her vision: To support people in a natural way. Her passion, courage, positive attitude and belief in the product helped this Bavarian powerhouse successfully build the company.
Following a six-page feature published in the magazine Natur & Heilen in 2003, thousands of bottles were ordered virtually overnight and the phone seemed to ring nonstop. As demand increased, so did production, staffing and, from that point on, the use of machinery to support the growing operation.
A new chapter
In July 2022, the founding Niedermaier-May family opened a new chapter for Dr. Niedermaier GmbH. Ufenau Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in the Dr. Niedermaier Pharma Group. The goal is to establish Dr. Niedermaier as a leading European group of companies in the field of food supplements.
Together with Ufenau, the company aims to strengthen its strong market position through strategic acquisitions, expansion of its product portfolio and broader geographical reach.
Dennis Gmeiner has been the new Managing Director in Hohenbrunn since November 2024 and explains the company’s strategy following the change:
“With Ufenau Capital Partners from Switzerland, we have a strong strategic investor behind us. This does not change our corporate culture or our commitment to promoting people’s health through our products, but we now have entirely new opportunities, such as generating synergies within a growing group of companies. The umbrella company NZYM Group was established for this purpose.
It has since acquired the Sinoplasan Group, another group of companies in the food supplement sector. Based near Stuttgart, they have strong expertise in the manufacture of food supplements in capsule form. We see significant potential for synergies in the future.”
